Steinway Piano Restoration & Fine Grand Piano Service

Serving Washington DC, Maryland & Northern Virginia

Butler & Sons Piano Restorations specializes in the restoration, rebuilding, regulation, voicing and maintenance of Steinway & Sons and other fine grand pianos.

With decades of hands on experience restoring and servicing fine instruments, John M Butler, RPT brings a craftsman’s attention to the mechanical details that allow a great piano to perform at its best.

Steinway & Sons grand pianos are a particular specialty, but my work extends to other fine grand pianos as well.

My work ranges from tuning, regulation & voicing to action restoration, complete touch weight redesign and rebuilding. Each piano is evaluated individually, with the goal of determining what the instrument actually needs and how best to bring out its musical potential.

"Hey John -  I just spent 2 hrs playing.  The difference is stunning - much more in tune, MUCH more responsive - it sounds and feels fantastic.  I know you said the voicing didn't turn out ideally, but I notice a significant difference, especially in the mid range (seems more full and "sings" more), and upper range (more brilliant).  I am extremely pleased.  It's like a new piano!  I would also like you to take care of tuning and maintenance in the future."

"...the pianist loves the work done on the piano. He says each note sounds clear and distinct, and that it is a pleasure to play it. Please share the feedback with Rick, John and Rebecca and thank them all for their hard (and expedited!) work on it."

A Family Tradition of Piano Craftsmanship

I began working in my father’s piano rebuilding shop in 1995 and joined the Piano Technicians Guild in 1996. What began as an apprenticeship developed into a career devoted to rebuilding and servicing Steinway & Sons and other fine grand pianos.

I took over the rebuilding business in 2006 and have continued the hands-on tradition my father established - careful evaluation, precision work, and attention to the small details that determine how a fine piano ultimately feels and sounds.

Every piano is different. My goal is not simply to replace parts, but to understand the instrument as a whole and determine what work will bring out its full musical potential.
